Philosophy
and Religious Thought
Distance Learning MA
Distance Learning MA
The course's primary focus is on the way in
which religious traditions represent strands of
philosophical thought and its
development. A major concern is the interplay between secular philosophy and
religious reflection and analysis. The balance of provision will enable you to
develop your philosophical skills and understanding. A foundational feature of
the course will be its engagement with you via the use of primary texts and a
focus on developing you as a sophisticated reader and writer. This is partnered
with an ongoing endeavour of promoting philosophy as transformational, as
practical and as a living tradition of engagement with the wider world. The
latter pertains not only to the specific 'Philosophy and Wisdom as Practice'
module, but also to the underlying ethos to which the teaching team are
committed. This course will be delivered using an innovative blend of digital technologies - students will be able to study at a distance, using a mix of video interviews, online forums, digitised texts and interactive tutorials. Rather than run with a 'summer school' approach, the course will offer a Spring-based Graduate Conference, where students will present papers either in person or virtually.
Career Paths
- Teacher - both potential and existing teachers can deepen their knowledge and appreciation of how key ideas within philosophy interact with, and are represented by strands of religious thought
- Academic - the course is an ideal preparation, with its focus on textual engagement, close argument and writing, for moving on to Doctoral study, lecturing, and the academic life
- Everything! The course addresses existential questions of finitude and mortality faced by all humans. The course allows students to explore, in depth, the manner in which humans have responded to their condition
